The X-Men Viewing Order

The most chronologically confusing film timeline ever.

Since the chronology of the X-Men films has become almost as confusing and convoluted as that of the comics it’s based on, this Viewing Order marks films based on what timeline they are a part of:

Original  |  Reboot  |  Dark Future

Original Timeline — the timeline of the first five movies of the series

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
X-Men
X2: X-Men United
X-Men: The Last Stand
The Wolverine
Deadpool
In the film, Deadpool himself doesn’t seem sure which timeline this film takes place in.
Deadpool 2

Reboot Timeline — the timeline of the post-reboot movies of the series

X-Men: First Class
X-Men: Days of Future Past
X-Men: Apocalypse
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Legion: Season 1
The main character of Legion is the son of Charles Xavier; Xavier’s wheelchair from X-Men: Apocalypse appears in one episode.
Legion: Season 2
Legion: Season 3
Deadpool
In the film, Deadpool himself doesn’t seem sure which timeline this film takes place in.
Deadpool 2

Dark Future Timeline — the timeline of the movies leading to “Logan”

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
X-Men
Deadpool
In the film, Deadpool himself doesn’t seem sure which timeline this film takes place in.
Deadpool 2
The Gifted: Season 1
Has no direct connection, but fits in well thematically.
The Gifted: Season 2
Has no direct connection, but fits in well thematically.
Logan

  1. Don’t know what’s going on here, but I don’t really agree with it. Following the Marvel Appendix, I believe it should be like this:

    Earth-10005/Original Timeline
    1962 – X-Men: First Class
    1979 – X-Men Origins: Wolverine
    2003 – X-Men
    2003 – X2: X-Men United
    2006 – X-Men: The Last Stand
2013 – The Wolverine: Unleashed Extended Edition
    2023 – X-Men: Days of Future Past

Wolverine goes back in time and creates Earth-66250, which branches off of this universe’s 1973.

    Earth-66250/Cable’s Timeline
    1962 – X-Men: First Class
    1973 – X-Men: Days of Future Past
    1983 – X-Men: Apocalypse
    1992 – X-Men: Dark Phoenix
    2008 – Deadpool
2018 – Deadpool 2: Super Duper Cut (Beginning)
2068 – Deadpool 2: Super Duper Cut (Cable’s future scenes)

Cable goes back in time and creates Earth-41633, which branches off of this universe’s 2018.

    Earth-41633/Deadpool 2 Timeline
    1962 – X-Men: First Class
    1973 – X-Men: Days of Future Past
    1983 – X-Men: Apocalypse
    1992 – X-Men: Dark Phoenix
    2008 – Deadpool
    2018 – Deadpool 2: Super Duper Cut

Deadpool goes back in time and saves Venessa, creating Earth-17315.

    Earth-17315/Logan Timeline
    1962 – X-Men: First Class
    1973 – X-Men: Days of Future Past
    1983 – X-Men: Apocalypse
    1992 – X-Men: Dark Phoenix
    2008 – Deadpool
2018 – Deadpool 2: Super Duper Cut (Beginning + End Credits)
    2023 – X-Men: Days of Future Past (Revised 2023)
    2027 – The New Mutants
    2029 – Logan

Deadpool of Earth-41633 keeps using Cable’s time travel device and creates Earth-18315, which is a branch off of Earth-10005.

    Earth-18315/Dead Weapon XI Timeline
    1962 – X-Men: First Class
    1979 – X-Men Origins: Wolverine
1979 – Deadpool 2: Super Duper Cut (End credits)

An unknown version of Xavier joins the Illuminati and protects the multiverse from potential dangers.

    Earth-????/Illuminati Timeline
2025 – Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (?)

The Year of the Dog reference puts Deadpool in 2008 at the latest. Deadpool 2 is 2018 according to the Appendix. The amount of time between the films is unspecified, so I take it as the X-Men films generally treat themselves, and a decade can pass without much changing. If you want, ignore the Year of the Dog and place Deadpool in 2016 or 2017.

The students in 2023 are humans. Xavier said he wanted to open the school for both humans and mutants in X-Men: Apocalypse.

This whole Logan is another timeline stuff is contradicted by X-Men: Apocalypse, The New Mutants and director James Mangold himself. Hugh Jackman made a mistake, people misinterpreted it. Seems clear that the reason X-Men: Apocalypse sets up the X-23 story in Logan and The New Mutants shows direct footage from the film.

The Gifted could arguably be set in Earth-10005 or Earth-18315. The showrunner said he pitched it as taking place in the erased timeline so it doesn’t step on the movies’ toes, so you can put it there even though there’s some contradictory information on that. I left it put, but it makes sense and there’s evidence. Some continuity errors pop up with how long the world has known about mutants, though.

Legion is not connected. The Professor X actor is different and, even ignoring that, cerebro history is murky and Xavier learning of another telepath for the first time twice. It overcomplicates everything. The best place is between First Class and X-Men Origins: Wolverine and say that he decided to start up the school again because of David’s new timeline.

That’s all I have to say, really.
